Red Juice, Or should I call it My "Miracle Juice" Concoction?

I heard about the "Miracle Juice" for the first time from my cousin Geetha's post on facebook. You will find the article at http://lachicaorganica.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/miracle-drink-carrot-beetroot-and-apple/. I  am however skeptical about the claims in the article that it cured Mr. Seto of cancer.  As an engineer and a physicist I believe in experiments under controlled conditions. I would tend to argue that Mr. Seto's was a one off case. So be forewarned that what worked for him might not work for everybody.

The Original Miracle Juice ingredients are A for Apple, B for Beetroot and C for Carrot.  My recipe is quite different.

Ingredients for 2 tall glasses:

  • Apple - 150 gm (1 medium size)
  • Beetroot -150 gm ( 1 medium size)
  • Bottle Gourd (Louki) - 100 gm
  • Celery - 2 to 3 ribs
  • Carrot - 70 gm
  • Ginger - 1 small finger
  • Lemon - 1 medium size
  • White Pumpkin - 150gm

I used a centrifugal juicer to extract the juice out of the vegetables.

Remove the thick skin of the bottle gourd and the white pumpkin and cut them into small cubes so that they may pass through the mouth of the juicer.

Beetroots are a good source of Vitamin C, Iron and Magnesium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Folate, Potassium and Manganese. I have found that the beets that I buy in Bangalore smell of a pesticide called gamma hexane. I suspect that that the farmers use it liberally to get rid of pests that infest the beets from time to time. Or may be it is just my imagination! However I always  play it safe and wash the beetroot in running water while continuously scrubbing it with a kitchen brush. After the thorough scrubbing I dunk the beetroot in salt water for 15 minutes to remove any residual pesticides. Cut the cleaned beetroot into small pieces for the juicer.

I like the flavor of celery and ginger in my juice. You would need to be careful about the amount of ginger as too much of it would make the juice spicy hot. Juice the apple last as the juice oxidizes as soon as it comes in contact with air. Squeeze lemon into the concoction and mix evenly. The juice tastes sweet with sugars from the apple as well as the beetroot.

Now, I do not know about it curing cancer but the juice is tasty and refreshing served with a couple of ice cubes!
